Enhancing the Inventory Management Experience
Problem
As Lula customers carried hundreds/thousands of items on the Lula platform, updating inventory became cumbersome for users
Date
Sept 2022
Role
As the Data UX Researcher, I was responsible for collaborating w/ UX Designer to capture rich and highly constructive user feedback that would directly influence and guide the design for a robust, non-standard inventory filtering feature.
Objectives
• Develop a seamless inventory management experience
• Decrease item out-of-stock rates
• Increase speed and ease of updating item properties
Research
1. User Interviews
• Reviewed notes & recordings of past interviews, as well as conducted 4 new interviews.
2. Card Sorting
• Internal collaboration with entire product team to sort then transform the user needs into a v1 filtering feature.
• Key Finding: Ability to sort and to select multiple items are crucial to creating a smooth user experience and to operating most efficiently.
3. Usability Tests / Task Analysis
• Organized in-person usability tests with 2 local customers. Users loaded our app as they regularly would and were assigned navigational tasks.
• Key Finding: Users did not meet our expectations in 2/5 of the tasks. We discovered an additional, and in hindsight, crucial field that users would love to filter by to most efficiently update their inventory.
Design
1. Collaboration:
Stakeholders: UX Designer, Head of Engineering, Back- & Front-end Eng. teams
2. Filter Button:
1. Added to Inventory page in app
2. Users have full capability of filtering on any column and hidden property
3. Multi-level item selection
Results
1. We found a 5-15% increase time after time in combined completion rates across all customers after 3-6 weeks.
2. Uncovered a preferred and highly useful property to filter on.
3. Users noted that the new inventory management experience was a large improvement and very helpful to their operations.
Reflection
• Dig deep at the root cause of issues and user requests. You never know what you’ll uncover.
• If you're traveling to conduct a usability test, be sure to check the weather first!
